Although in the U.S. there is indication of STEM worker surplus in some areas, many studies have shown evidence that there is a shortage of workers in the STEM labor market. In fact, there is significant heterogeneity in the STEM labor market in the U.S. For instance, some levels of the academic sphere are usually overprovided. There is often an oversupply of Ph.D.’s vying for tenure-track academic positions in many fields. In contrast, the public sector and private industries have shortage in specific key fields such as cybersecurity, software development, nuclear engineering, intelligence professionals, etc.
The situation is distinct from one college to another, from one geographic area to another and from one industry to another. Addressing STEM worker storage or surplus requires implementation of policies and strategies that target specific problems that can be found in academic spheres, public sectors, and private industries. Therefore, an accurate portray of the supply and demand of the STEM labor force necessitate better data and consistent monitoring of both employer needs and STEM workers availability. This requires the involvement of all available resources capable of providing effective solutions.
To be part of the solution, AIIR has initiated studies and an endeavor to attract students to STEM in more than a hundred universities and high schools throughout the 50 U.S. states. This will eliminate shortage of workers in the STEM labor market segment.
Below is a list of high schools and universities to which AIIR provided its expertise by distributing support materials to attract more students to STEM fields in need.
